ATP Delray Beach Open: History Of The Competition
This tournament appeared on the men’s main tour calendar in the early 1990s. From 1993 to 1998, tennis players traveled to Coral Springs in Florida’s Broward County. Then the championship site was moved to Delray Beach, just 45 kilometers from Coral Springs. Since then, athletes have competed each year as part of the Delray Beach ATP at the Delray Beach Tennis Center hard courts. This complex was erected in 1992. The Delray Beach Tennis Center has a seating capacity of 8,200 spectators.
In the 1990s Delray Beach ATP was mostly played on clay courts. Organizers only switched to hard courts in 1999, just after the move. At one time even the name of the championship was a reference to the surface on which it is played:
- Until 1998, the tournament was called the International Tennis Championships, with the exception of 1996.
- In 1996 the organizers held the event under the name America’s Red Clay Court Championships.
- In 1999 and 2000, tennis players came to the Citrix Tennis Championships. Citrix Systems is an American company that develops software solutions for virtualization.
- Then for a long time, until the 2016 season, the tournament was called the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships. At one time, the event was sponsored by Millennium National Events. Then the city took the event under its wing.
- Since 2017, the championships have been known as the Delray Beach Open. Currently, the main financial support for the tournament is provided by Vitacost, which sells vitamins, nutritional supplements and organic products.
