Atlanta Open History
The Atlanta Open is an important men’s tennis tournament that has been part of the main men’s tour since 2010. The competition’s license was purchased from Indianapolis, where the tournament had been played on hard courts since 1988. Back then, it was a popular event among top global players, as indicated by its list of winners and finalists.
However, in 1998, the status of the American championship was downgraded from the ATP Championship Series to the ATP International Gold. Despite this change, the tournament was considered the best of its status in 2001. Unfortunately, its popularity started to wane in 2003, and by 2009, the organizers first cut the prize money significantly before deciding to cancel the event entirely. The decision was precipitated by the withdrawal of Thomson/RCA, the tournament’s main sponsor, in 2007.
Before the city of Atlanta took over the tournament, it had been hosting international tennis competitions for nearly ten years, although these were Challengers – Verizon Tennis Challenge. In 2010, the local championship was promoted to the 250 category and was renamed the Atlanta Open. In 2015, GF Sports took over the rights to host the tournament from the American Tennis Association.
The inaugural Atlanta Open took place at the Atlanta Athletic Club. In 2011, the tournament moved to the Racquet Club, and since 2012, it has been consistently held at Atlantic Station.
The American player John Isner holds the record for the most Atlanta Open wins, with six titles to his name. He’s particularly successful in smaller tournaments in the U.S., and he’s reached the finals more times than any other player.
