ATP Argentina Open: History Of The Competition
For a long time, the Argentina Open was considered a second-tier event, like the current major Challengers. The tournament was held without interruptions from its inception until 1982. Then there was a pause of two seasons. Two championships were held between 1985 and 1988, after which the event disappeared from the calendar again.
The next stage was a landmark for Buenos Aires, because the competition received ATP status. But the Argentines only had enough money for three years. The tournament had to be downgraded to ATP Challenger. In 2001, it became possible to return to the former heights. Since then, the capital of Argentina has held annual competitions of the tour.
ATP Buenos Aires matches are played on the dirt courts of the historic Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club. This club was first mentioned in the history of tennis in Argentina in 1892, which means that in 2022 it celebrated its 130th anniversary. The leaders of the sports complex took an active part in the creation of the Argentine Tennis Federation, which has been active since 1921.
