The 2023 Laver Cup is the sixth time this men’s tennis tournament will happen. It’s a competition between teams from Europe and the rest of the world. They’ll play on an indoor hard court at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, Canada, from September 22 to 24.
Team World won the Laver Cup last year and will try to win again this year.
The Laver Cup is a bit like tennis’s version of golf’s Ryder Cup. Teams from Europe and the rest of the world compete against each other. It started in 2017 and is usually held two weeks after the US Open. The place changes every year and switches between European cities and other global cities.
In 2019, the ATP Tour officially recognized the Laver Cup. The matches in this tournament are a bit different. If a match is tied at one set each, they play a 10-point tiebreak instead of a third set. This helps finish matches in about two hours. This way, four matches can be played in one day. Also, unlike regular ATP matches, players get advice from their team and captains during the game.
Laver Cup Prize Money
The Laver Cup 2023 has a prize money of USD 2.25 million. Players get paid based on their ATP ranking. If their team wins, each player gets an extra USD 250,000. But, points from this tournament don’t add to their ATP Tour points for the year.
Laver Cup Players
The Laver Cup teams this year are different from 2022.
Federer retired and won’t play, but he’ll be there. Nadal, Djokovic, and Murray won’t play for Team Europe either. Instead, Casper Ruud and Andrey Rublev will lead Team Europe. Tsitsipas is injured, so 19-year-old Arthur Fils will play. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is in for the injured Holger Rune. Hubert Hurkacz and Gael Monfils are also on Team Europe.
For Team World, Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime and Americans Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe will lead. Tommy Paul, Francisco Cerundolo, and Ben Shelton will play too. Christopher Eubanks and Milos Raonic are backup players. Nick Kyrgios won’t play because of an injury.
Team captains are Bjorn Borg for Europe and John McEnroe for World. McEnroe said he’s excited about the team’s mix of experience and youth. He’s confident since many played in the previous win in London.
