The Croatia Open, known today as the Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag, has been a prominent fixture in the ATP tour since 1990. Initially, it was organized in late spring as a lead-up to the French Open. However, since 1992, it has been a part of the summer clay-court series. The matches are held at the ITC Stella Maris, which houses a central court that can seat 3,500 spectators.
Over the years, the tournament has seen various names, each reflecting its sponsor. For a time, it was called the Vegeta Croatia Open after Vegeta, a popular seasoning made by the Podravka company. Nowadays, it’s known as the Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag, named after the Plava Laguna hotel chain in Croatia. In fact, the players officially stay at one of these hotels during the tournament.
The tournament is of significant importance to the city of Umag. It not only boosts the local tourism sector but has also won the Franjo Buchar Award, Croatia’s top sports award.
