Millennium Estoril Open: History Of The Competition
ATP Estoril does not have a rich history. The competition in the Portuguese city of Cascais has only been held since 2015. Previously, Portugal hosted the Portugal Open for almost 25 years. Players came to the city of Oeiras.
In 2014, it became clear that the sponsors of the Portugal Open were no longer going to support the local championship. The Portuguese urgently engaged in a search for new options. As a result, former Dutch tennis player Benno van Weggel and Portuguese soccer agent Jorge Mendes came to the rescue. With their active support, the championship was organized and moved from Oeiras to Estoril. The event has been going on since the 2015 season.
Officially, the championship is called the Millennium Estoril Open in honor of its main sponsor, the Millennium Bank.
