Currently second-best Dutch tennis player ranked as no.40 at the latest ATP list, which is his career-best ranking, is twenty-six years old Tallon Griekspoor.

Tallon Griekspoor was born on 2nd July 1966 in Haarlem, Netherlands. He was raised in a sports family, as his father Ron was a motocross driver and his mother Monique a tennis instructor.

His love for tennis he inherited from his five years older twin brothers, Scott and Kevin, whom he watched playing while growing up. He started training tennis since youngest age and proved his passion for the sport by traveling for two hours every day to Belgium to practice with his coach.

Tallon didn’t have any notable results as a junior and became a pro at age of nineteen. At that level, he earned himself the title of “First player to win a five straight titles in the history of tennis” and also won eight Challenger titles in one season.

While growing up he idolized Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal. In January 2022 he had a chance to play against Rafa at Melbourne Summer Set tournament, but due to foot injury he pulled out of the game. Tallon’s favorite surface for playing tennis is clay.

Aside from tennis, he is a big fan of motocross racing and has revealed that his superhero is Belgian-Dutch driver Max Verstappen and his favorite athlete is the Dutch motocross racer Jeffrey Herlings.

Dennis Schenk

Tallon’s team currently consists of two tennis coaches.
Since start of season 2019 he is coached by his compatriot Dennis Schenk.

Dennis Schenk is fifty-four years old tennis coach from Amsterdam who since 2013 resides in Palma de Mallorca. He was not a great tennis player, but then he finished education in sports at CIOS and was appointed as tennis coach at Amstelpark Tennis Academy when he was twenty.

He was also an assistant coach at Dutch National Juniors tennis team. Familiar with his good work there, when become too good and was able to stand on its own feet, Robin Haase hired him as a private coach. Then he worked with players like Igor Sijsling, Thiemo de Bakker and Tim van Rijthoven.

In the first-year coaching Griekspoor, he led him to one Challenger title at Banja Luka Open and in the next one Tallon qualified for the first time in the main singles draw of a Grand Slam at the Australian Open.

“Dennis does hammer a lot on discipline and focus during a training. The way you train is also the way you play a match, he says. I train better now, more concentrated and more attentive.” said Tallon at the beginning of their collaboration.

The biggest result together, so far, they made it in season 2021 when Griekspoor wrote history by winning eight Challengers in one year. In 2022 alongside one more Challenger title, came the first ATP title, this time playing in doubles with Botic van de Zandschulp at European Open in Belgium.

At the beginning of this year Tallon won his maiden ATP singles title, defeating Benjamin Bonzi in the final at Maharashtra Open, which led him into top 40 ATP players in the World.

Kristof Vliegen

From the beginning of this year, Tallon added Kristof Vliegen to his team, a coach with whom he trained before, for five years until the end of 2018.

Kristof Vliegen (40) was born on 22nd June 1982 in Maaseik, Belgium. He is a former tennis player with best career ranking of no.30 in the World. Began playing tennis at age of six at the same club as WTA Tour player Kim Clijsters.

They grew up in same neighborhood, attended same school and were enrolled in same tennis clinic. During his career he won Junior Wimbledon in 2000 and on professional level he won nine Challengers and two Futures. He considered serve as his best shot and hard court his favorite surface. His idol while growing up was Boris Becker.

After retirement he finished education at GPTCA and became certified tennis coach. On ATP tour he coached Tallon’s older brother Scott and his compatriot Joris de Loore. From 2020 until 2022 was coach at Tennis club set Wahis and from 2022 is technical director of the BATD tennis academy in Belgium.

He started coaching Tallon in 2013 and they worked together for five years, period in which the Dutch won fourteen Futures titles and one Challenger. After they split up at the end of 2018, Tallon said,
“I had a difficult first four-five months, we parted ways after five years of working together. That was pretty spicy. From the age of 17 to 22 he was like a second father to me. He knows more about me than anyone.”

Before the start of this season, Tallon hired Vliegen once again, hoping to continue where they left off five years ago.

Former Tallon Griekspor’s coach

Raemon Sluiter

For almost two years, since March 2021 until the end of season 2022, Tallon collaborated with another Dutch coach, Raemon Sluiter.

Raemon Sluiter (44) was born on 13th April 1978 in Rotterdam, Netherlands. He is former professional tennis player, with limited success during his career. Has won 1995 Junior French Open in doubles and on pro level has won total sixteen titles, both Futures and Challengers. He reached career-high ATP ranking of World no.46.

After retirement he became coach and was coaching Kiki Bertens since 2015 until the end of 2019. Then he started coaching Griekspoor.
“It is very positive from both sides. We are now starting to get to know each other a little better. I am very positive about it.” Tallon said in the first month of their collaboration.

Sluiter has part of the credits for Tallon’s eight title in season 2021, as well as for both titles in 2022. Due to disagreements about how he should develop further, they split up.

“Raemon wanted me to play a bit more attacking. That’s what I wanted too. Only we didn’t quite agree on how I should do that. That caused some irritation on and off the track. We worked well together for two years, but both came to the conclusion that it was better to separate.” commented Tallon.
