Jiri Lehecka Career
Jiří Lehečka was born on 8 November 2001 in Mladá Boleslav, but grew up in the small village of Kněžmost. He comes from a sporting family, his father Jiří was a swimmer and his mother an athlete. He started playing tennis at the age of 4, but he also took up cross-country skiing, skiing, skating, swimming, football and cycling. He says he stayed with tennis because of his older sister, who inspired him.
Already at the age of 15, Lehečka got the opportunity to play a wild card qualifier in Prostějov (2017), and a year later he reached his first ITF final in Říčany, Prague.
In 2019, Davis Cup fans got to know this promising youngster, as he played Robin Haas in the February qualifier and even won a set against him. After that, we could already see him in challengers and in the main competitions, he even reached the final in doubles alongside Jiri Vesely in Prostejov. Just a few weeks later, he and Jonáš Forejtek dominated the doubles at the junior Wimbledon.
In the unconventional 2020 season, Lehečka played a lot of matches on home soil and finally claimed his first title in September when he defeated Sebastian Baez in the final at the ITF event in Prague. Two months later, he was in another final, but failed in Greece.
The year 2021 was then a breakthrough year for Lehecka – after two more ITF championships, he finally started to make a name for himself in challengers, winning in Tampere, Finland in July and just a few days later he was in another final in Poznan. In September, he added a second triumph in Bucharest and managed to fight (unsuccessfully) for the title in Pau, France. To this he added a total of 3 doubles challenger titles, each time with Czech teammates.
In 2022, Lehecka also made his debut at the Australian Open via the 3-round qualification, but in his first Grand Slam he lost to Dimitrov in the main event in 4 sets. He went on to compete in the main event of all Grand Slams, and did not have to play the qualifiers due to his ranking.
Fans still remember his February indoor tournament in Rotterdam, where he unexpectedly reached the semi-finals against Tsitsipas, whom he lost in 3 sets. He defeated Shapovalov, Van de Zandschulp and Musetti.
Probably the biggest achievement is Lehecka’s participation in the NextGen ATP Finals 2022, or the Tournament of Champions under 21. Lehecka played great there, falling short in the title fight to American Brandon Nakashima.
