New Great Britain’s rising star on the ATP Tour is 21 years old Jack Draper.

Jack Alexander Draper was born on 22^nd December 2001 in Sutton, London, England. His father is Roger Draper, former chief executive of Sport England and the Lawn Tennis Association and his mother Nicky Draper, a former junior British Tennis Champion. As she was a coach at a local club in Sutton, she brought Jack along to his first training session at age of 5. Interesting fact is that for 18 months, between the ages of 11 and 12-years-old he was part of the Chelsea FC Academy, before deciding tennis was the sport for him. Jack is a left-handed player (two-handed backhand), like some of the greatest in the sport, such as Rafael Nadal, John McEnroe, Goran Ivanisevic. His tennis idol is countryman Andy Murray.

Who is current Jack Draper’s coach?

Almost for one year now, Jack Draper is under the guidance of tennis coach James Trotman.

James Trotman was born on 16^th February 1979 in Ipswich, England. He played tennis at his local club Sproughton Tennis Club and mad significant results as a junior. He more often played in doubles and won 1995 Junior Wimbledon and 1997 Junior Australian Open. Due to chronic injures that prevented him from making an impact at senior professional level, he retired as a player and moved into coaching.

Trotman has worked with many top 100 ATP players and represented both Tennis Australia and the Lawn Tennis Association for the past 20 years, among them Kyle Edmund who for one year under Trotman won the Levene Gouldin&Thompson Tennis Challenger in Binghamton, US, and Hong Kong ATP Challenger.

Starting from 2017 under Trotman mentorship, in the coaching team together with Facundo Lugones, is Cameron Norrie. Same year Norrie won his first Challenger title in Binghamton and in 2018 teamed up with Kyle Edmnund in doubles won his maiden ATP title at Estoril Open. His first ATP title in singles he won at the Los Cabos Open in 2021 and same year Cameron made his biggest success so far by winning Indian Wells. This year he won Delray Beach Open, reached Wimbledon semifinal where he lost to eventual champion Novak Djokovic and entered World top 10.

Since October 2021, James Trotman only works with Norrie for a few weeks each year, and has taken over as full-time coach of Jack Draper, who that year earned a top 250 debut in the ATP rankings. Jack’s work with the new coach immediately showed a result, in January 2022 won his first ATP Challenger at Citta di Forli. Next month he secured his second and third ATP Challenger at Citta di Forli IV and Citta di Forli V. In April Jack won Saint-Brieuc Challenger in France, later at Wimbledon made his first Grand Slam victory and reached his highest ranking of No.55 in the World.   

“After he won his first Challenger at the start of the year we were having a conversation and spoke about how there’s one thing that’s certain with tennis: there’s always a winner and a loser. You can’t hide from that. I said look if you have three weeks this year when you don’t lose you have had a really good year in my view. He’s obviously gone much more.” said Trotman.

Jack Draper’ Past Coaches

Ryan Jones

For four years, from 2017 until middle of 2021, Draper has been coached at the Junior Elite Tennis Academy in Middlesex, by Ryan Jones.

Ryan Jones is a British Coach who did not have any success as a tennis player, and has been coaching tennis since 2003, spending most of his time developing professional tennis players. He comes from a tennis pedigree, as the son of Alan Jones who famously coached Jo Durie to the top 5 in the World back in the 1980’s. Ryan was former coach of Borna Coric and Kyle Edmund, collaboration that culminated in Borna winning Juniors US Open and both breaking into ATP top 100.

Under his mentorship, Jack Draper has won eight titles on ITF and ATP Challenger Tour, and as a junior he reached 2018 Junior Wimbledon Championships. During 2018 Draper won Nottingham, Roehampton, and Lagos Futures, next year Roehampton, Chiswick and Shrewsbury Futures in singles, and Cancun Futures in doubles. Before they ended collaboration, Jack managed to win Sunderland Futures.

“He was always a great competitor, but he needed to develop weapons. That was my biggest question over his game at the beginning: would he respond to what I was looking for? Would he respond to the truth? And he did. Than you think, OK, This kid has got the mindset to potentially do some damage.” said Ryan back in the days.

Justin Sherring

Since little kid until age of 16, Jack was coached by Justin Sherring

Justin Sherring is a Tennis Director at Weybrodge Tennis Academy, specialising in the development of players from 5 to 16-years-old. He guided through the early age, several international professional players currently on the tour. He was 13 years with Joe Sulisbury who reached Wimbledon Doubles Semifinal and was former coach to GB No.1 Johanna Konta when she was 19.

With Draper were together for 10 years, and Sherring taught him the basics of the tennis game.

“He was a real, talented dude. He was crazy competitive, a natural-born sort of a fighter, and just wanted to win so badly. We had so much fun and he had so much passion for the game. We are really, really good mates now.” said Justin on his trainee.
