Felix became a member of Tennis Canada’s National Training Centre in Montreal since 2014. His tennis idols are Roger Federer and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and favourite tournament US Open.
Who is Felix Auger’s Current Coach?
Since 2017 when he turned pro, Felix is under mentorship of French tennis coach Frederic Fontang.
Frederic Fontang was born on 18th of March 1970 in Casablanca, Morocco. He was successful junior, won Petits As in 1984 and became French U16 champion in 1986. He started pro career in 1989 and during ten years until his retirement in 1999, he won only one ATP title in Palermo, Italy and one Challenger title in Merano, Italy. His best ATP ranking was No.59. After retirement Frederic started coaching career in Pau Pyrenees Academy in France.
There he met Jeremy Chardy and was his coach for 12 years until January 2011. When Jeremy first came to train at the Academy, Fontang gave him a gift, Paolo Coelho’s novel, The Alchemist.
“I gave him this book to read because the life of a tennis player is a lot of travel, you can win money, and you can see a lot of good things. But you need to know that the simple things are good also. It’s good to have dreams, in life it’s important, but sometimes you can have everything close.” said Fontang.
During 10 years together, Chardy became 2005 Junior Wimbledon champion, won six Challenger titles and one ITF Futures title in singles, one Challenger and one ITF Futures title in doubles, his single ATP title so far at Stuttgart Open in 2009 and ATP title at 2010 Brisbane International in doubles. He also reached a singles ranking of World No.31.
From 2012 till 2016 Fontang coached Vasek Pospisil.
“He can compete with the best players because his body is very athletic. Now it’s in the mind, it’s confidence. Vasek has the personality for that.” said Fontang at the beginning of their collaboration.
For their time together Vasek didn’t have much success in singles reaching only one final in Washington, but was great at tournaments in doubles, winning Indian Wells, Beijing, Rotterdam, Atlanta, Basel and his biggest title in career so far, 2014 Wimbledon. He reached his best ATP ranking of No.25 in singles and No.4 in doubles.
Frederic Fontang became member of Felix’s coaching team since 2016 and his final lost among juniors in the Roland-Garros final. His added value to the team was immediately apparent, in September 2016, Felix won the Junior US Open with a straight-sets victory over Miomir Kecmanovic. Later that year he won his first pro title in singles at the ITF Futures in Birmingham and his first pro doubles title in Niceville.
The following year Felix made grater progress as a pro and achieved big success for his age. In March he won his second ITF Futures in Sherbrook and already in June he captured his maiden ATP Challenger at the Open de Lyon. In September he managed to win his second ATP Challenger at the Copa Sevilla and became the youngest player to break the top 200 since Rafael Nadal.
“The most important challenge with Felix is to stay patient and work on his development process. His talent will do the rest. It’s positive that great champions like McEnroe and Evert see Felix as a possible World No.1.” said Fontang
In 2018 Felix continued his improvement and Challengers success. Early that year he won his first ATP Challenger doubles title in Budapest and in June he successfully defended his title at Open de Lyon and became the youngest player in history to defend an ATP Challenger title. At the end of the season, he won Tashkent Challenger.
During 2019 he played three ATP finals and Davis Cup final but lost each one of them, and next year Felix claimed the doubles title at the Paris Masters.
