Who Is Cristian Garin’s Coach in 2022?

Cristian Garin is currently the best professional tennis player in Chile and ranks 43 in the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Singles category made official on the 13th of September, 2021.

He started his tennis career as a professional in 2012 and became the youngest Chilean to win a match on the ATP World Tour in 2013. Since then, he has continued to make waves as one of the most promising tennis players in the world, winning five titles alone so far.

The 26-year-old was born to the family of Sergio and Anna Medone in Santiago, Chile, who were both engineers. Still, his father did not allow his professional to stop him from introducing his son to tennis at age five.

During childhood, Cristian idolized Roger Federer, Carlos Moya, Marat Safin, and Guillermo Coria. Eventually, he got a chance to showcase his talent in 2010 at the World’s Under-14 Championship, which he won alongside Bastián Malla and Sebastián Santibáñez. He prefers to play on a hard surface which is evident as all the titles he won came on Clay, and he is globally recognized as a US Open player.

Current Coach of Cristian Garin

Cristian Garin‘s current coach is Pepe Vendrell, and the pair started working together this year after he parted way with his former coach, Mariano Puerta. Pepe Vendrell is a Spanish Coach and Captain of the Spanish Team at the 2021 ATP Cup. The coach began his relationship with Cristiano in 2022 after ending his long-term relationship with Spanish tennis player Roberto Bautista Agut, whom he coached for ten years (2011-2021).

Agut described the coach as his friend, brother, and psychologist, after they parted ways with no strings said to have been attached. The relationship between the two was fruitful, with Roberto winning a total of 9 Singles at the ATP World’s Tours to break into the top 10 World rankings (currently at 9) over the years.

Pepe had quite an immediate effect on Gurin as he reached the first Wimbledon Grand Slam Quarterfinal of his Career to become the eighth Chilean male player to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal and the fourth to do in the Wimbledon Open. He eventually lost to Nick Kyrgios, who took on Novak Djokovic in the final match.

However, the year has not been so great on paper for Christine. He started the year with a loss in his first match at the ATP Cup to a familiar face, Roberto Bautista Agut. He hinted at the possibility of taking a break due to the discomforts he feels in his shoulder after he lost on home soil at the Chile Open to Alejandro Tabilo.

Previous Coaches of Cristian Garin

Cristian did not have any recognized professional coach until 2019, although he made his first professional appearance in 2012 at the Cachantun Cup ATP Challenger. During this period, he was led by his father and worked personally on his growth as a professional tennis player. He has not maintained a close relationship with his coaches as none of them has been able to manage for over a year.

Here are details about each coach that has worked with Cristian Garin since 2019:

Andrés Schneiter (2019-2020)

The former Argentine professional tennis player was the first to manage Cristian and recorded the most successes with the player by guiding him to four (4) ATP titles. As a professional tennis player, Andres did not have quite a blossom career and ended his career with no Singles title and 2 Career Double titles (partnered with Sergio Roitman), as well as won a total of 10 Challengers and 8 Future tournaments.

The Argentine started his professional coaching career when he began to manage the ex-coach of Christine, Mariano Puerta. Andres guided Mariano to the 2005 French Open Final, losing to Rafael Nadal.

Cristian decided to move on when he felt he was not learning enough from Andres, which he made known publicly during an exclusive interview as below:

“Much of it is what we’ve talked about. I was not clear on things regarding my game, and I felt that I was not improving; I had a lot to improve, and I wasn’t doing it, and that had me like this: competing not even close to my one hundred percent. Obviously, the tournaments were not the same; you had to adapt to the form because it was super different from the usual. In general, I felt that I was not improving, that the planning had not been correct, and that had me, as you say, was in low spirits.”

Andres was quite upset with the announcement and claimed Cristian did not inform him before making the decision, but the player denied this claim saying that he called him before moving on to work with his next coach.

Franco David (2020-2021)

The Argentine coach began to coach Cristian following his departure with Andres and was highly rated by the player. Their time together was short-lived by the breakout of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Later in the year, Cristian participated in some tournaments and could only record an appearance in the semi-final of the Hamburg European Open as his highest achievement under Franco. When Franco caught the coronavirus, Christine moved on with his career.

Franco had quite an impressive career as a tennis player, reaching 9 ATP Singles finals and winning 3 of them.

His expertise was further exhibited in his coaching career as he had worked with some top professional tennis players, including Gaston Gaudio, who won the 2004 French Open, and guided Del Potro to the 2009 US Open title, defeated veteran Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer on his way to glory.

Mariano Puerta (2021-2022)

The relationship between Mariano and Christine was instead fast and was not made too public. The best guess is that Christine needed someone to come in for the sick Franco towards the end of 2021, and Mariano was the best guy for the job. Therefore, they are not so many details about their relationship.

However, Mariano was quite a successful tennis player and had his career underway before he was found guilty of doping. He has 3 ATP Singles titles and 3 Doubles titles to his name to make the top 10 World Tennis Ranking in 2005 before retiring in 2005. Apart from Christine, there is no record of Mariano coaching any other tennis player.
