Taylor Harry Fritz is a 25-year-old professional tennis player from the United States. He’s currently ranked as the 9th best player globally by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), with his highest-ever ranking being the 5th. So far, Fritz has won five ATP singles titles.
Tennis runs deep in Fritz’s family. His mother, Kathy May, was a professional tennis player who won seven Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) singles titles and achieved a career-high ranking of World No. 10. His father, Guy Henry Fritz, also played professional tennis.
Fritz’s talent began to shine in 2015 when he became the top-ranked boys junior tennis player worldwide. In that year, he reached the quarterfinals in all four junior Grand Slams. At the 2015 Australian Open, he made it to the quarterfinals, where Hong Seong-chan defeated him. Fritz lost the 2015 French Open boys’ singles final to Tommy Paul, an American player. He was also defeated in the 2015 Wimbledon semifinals by Reilly Opelka, another American.
Fritz got his revenge against Tommy Paul in the final of the 2015 US Open boys’ singles competition, where he won in three sets. This was a repeat of the 2015 Roland Garros boys’ final.
After his Junior US Open victory, Fritz turned professional in September 2015. His first Grand Slam appearance was at the 2016 Australian Open. Although he qualified, he was defeated in the first round by fellow American Jack Sock in a match that went to five sets.
In 2016, Fritz finished the year as the youngest player in the ATP top 100. He achieved his first Grand Slam third-round appearance at the 2018 US Open, where he lost to the 9th seed, Dominic Thiem. He ended 2018 with a career-high ranking of 47.
Fritz’s first ATP Tour title came in 2019 at the Eastbourne International, where he defeated Sam Querrey in straight sets. By the end of 2019, he had climbed up to the 32nd spot in the men’s world rankings.
In 2022, Fritz advanced to the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time at the Australian Open, where he lost to Stefano Tsitsipas in a closely contested five-set match. Fritz went on to defeat Rafael Nadal, the 2022 Australian Open Champion, in the final of the 2022 Indian Wells Masters. This victory was Fritz’s first Masters 1000 title and his second career title.
Who Are Current Taylor Fritz Coaches?
Like an age-old Roman power, American Powerhouse Taylor Fritz has a triumvirate of coaches behind him. Fritz has recently added Michael Russell to his coaching staff.
Russell began working with Fritz in the closing weeks of 2021. Fritz’s South African Coach David Nainkin stopped travelling, so Fritz added Russell to his team to make up for the Void.
Fritz is therefore being presently coached by Michael Rusell, David Nainkin and Paul Annacone. Wolfgang Oswald is the physiotherapist on Fritz’s team. He consults with the team amongst other things on biochemical motion analysis, basically Fritz’s ability to move on the court.
Michael Russell
Michael Russell, the most recent addition to the Fritz Coaching Team is himself a former American professional Tennis player who holds the record of most United States Tennis Association (USTA) Pro Circuit singles titles (24).
Russell played college level sports. He played college level tennis while in college and was named the 1997 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Rookie of the year award before he became a professional tennis player. Russell was also in the 1997 Rolex Collegiate All-Star Team.
Michael Russell became a professional tennis player in 1997. A week before he was to go pro, he suffered an injury in his right arm but he didn’t let that deter him. Russell spent the next five months recuperating and returned to the tennis circuit.
Russell finished the year 2021 inside the top 100 ranked ATP players having had some success that year. Rusell had played his way through qualifiers to four successive Grand Slams (From the 2000 Wimbledon to 2001 Roland Garros). At the 2001 Roland Garros, Russell was able to get to the fourth round where he was defeated by then World No.1 Gustavo Kuerten in five sets despite Russell having taken the first two sets.
Michael Russell was plagued by multiple injuries throughout his career, frequently requiring surgery, spending large swathe of time away from the courts but he was always determined to succeed as a tennis player.
Despite his small frame, and his injury problems. Russell achieved a career high ranking of World No. 60 in August 2007 and was frequently in the top 100. Russell retired in 2015 and started coaching.
Russell formed the “Michael Russell Tennis”, a coaching establishment in 2015. He has worked extensively with the USTA player development program. Russell has coached Frances Tiafoe, Sam Querrey, Mackenzie Mcdonald, Tennys Sandgren, Ryan Harrison and Taylor Fritz.
Russell is a private coach to Taylor Fritz, they started working together at the end of 2021 in a run that has seen Fritz win the 2022 Indian wells open (his first ATP Masters 1000 title) and move up in ATP rankings from No.25 to No.14. Fritz also achieved a career high of No.13 in March, 2022.

Paul Annacone
Paul Annacone is a former American professional tennis player turned coach. Annacone played three years of college level tennis. Annacone was the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Player of the year for 1984. He was all-American all three years of his college career.
Annacone won three singles title during his professional career. His career best ranking was World No.12 in 1985.
Annacone was more prolific playing doubles, he won 14 doubles titles and achieved a career ranking of World No.3 in 1987. One of Annacone’s 14 titles was the 1985 Australian Open doubles title.
Paul Annacone has an outstanding coaching resume. His former charges include two Former World No.1 : Pete Sampras and Roger Federer, former British No.1 Tim Henman, WTA player Sloane Stephens, and Swiss Star Stan Wawrinka.
Annacone coached former World No.1 , American Pete Sampras from 1995-2001. Annacone and Sampras parted ways but reconciled in 2002 eventually ending their partnership when Sampras retired that Year.
Annacone coached Sampras to nine Grand Slam Titles, the last of which was the 2002 US Open title after which Sampras retired.
Annacone coached British No.1 Tim Henman from the Paris Masters,2003(which Henman won) until Henman retired in 2007.
Annacone coached Roger Federer from 2010 to 2013. Under his guidance Federer won two ATP finals, 2012 Wimbledon Singles Grand Slam title and returned to a world number 1 ranking. The ATP 2010 finals was the only competition where Federer beat all the other three members of the big Four (Djokovic, Nadal, Murray).
Paul Annacone began working with Taylor Fritz at the beginning of the 2018 season and was instrumental to Fritz’s astronomical rise in the Year. Fritz moved from outside the world hundred to world No.47 in 2018. Annacone has since helped in propelling Fritz to his career-high World No.13 ranking.

David Nainkin
South African David Nainkin is a former professional tennis player who works with the USTA. Nainkin has over the years coached several tennis players including Wayne Fereira, Mardy Fish and Sam Querrey. Nainkin was head coach of the 2020 US Olympic Tennis Team.
Nainkin started training with Fritz when Fritz was seventeen years old. Nainkin has in effect been the custodian over Fritz career that has seen Fritz rise from his ATP debut to his world Top 25 status. Nainkin has been with Fritz the longest and has been somewhat of an architect for Fritz’s career.
In 2023, Taylor Fritz’s performance showed significant improvement under the guidance of his coaching team. His year started off strong with a brilliant performance in the United Cup and he carried that momentum to various tournaments, including victories in Dallas and Delray Beach. Fritz’s journey in the Australian Open, although cut short in the second round, was promising. His consistent reach to the semi-finals and quarter-finals in tournaments like Acapulco, Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Munich, and Geneva showed an improved level of play and resilience. A notable highlight was his performance at the French Open, where he advanced to the third round.
Junior Career Coach
Taylor Fritz was coached at the beginning of his career by his parents. His Father Guy Fritz works constantly with the USTA. When his mother, seven-time WTA singles champion Kathy May saw that young Fritz was heavily into pursuing a tennis career, she swooped in and helped him train massively to attain his goal.
