Gael Monfils Career
Gael Monfils was born on September 1, 1986 in the small French town of Bobigny. His father came from Guadeloupe and his mother was born in Martinique.
Monfils started in the junior circuit back in 2002. He combined adult Futures with junior competition and was hugely successful two seasons later as junior number one, winning three of the four majors. The same year he made his ATP Tour debut, reaching the quarter-finals in Metz for the first time and then playing in the Masters Series for the first time, winning one bout.
In 2005, for the first time he made it to the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament, competing in the Australian Open. It is interesting to note that despite his outstanding physical features and undoubted talent, Monfils has not yet been able to prove himself properly in the majors: his best results remain the semi-finals of Roland Garros (2008) and the US Open (2016).
In 2005, the Frenchman debuted in the top 50, and just a season later became the first racket of France. Despite the fact that Monfils regularly beat the top tennis players (in those years he already had wins over such players as Ivan Ljubicicic, Andy Roddick and Marat Safin), he obviously lacked stability. In addition, his inability to save strength was also reflected in his results, for example in 2008 he suffered an unfortunate shoulder injury at a tournament in Nottingham, as a result of which he was forced to miss Wimbledon.
Nevertheless, despite a succession of injuries, Monfils soon won the first victory of his career against world number one (Rafael Nadal) and was promoted to the top 10 in February 2009. His season was frankly uneventful – he missed a number of important competitions, but was invited to the national team and won his second ATP trophy (Metz).
The Frenchman spent the following seasons with variable success: on the one hand, he was able to reverse the negative trend in duels with Roger Federer, winning the first victory in the history of head-to-head encounters, but the only serious success in this period was winning the Davis Cup with the French team in 2014. The reason for this was new injuries, which caused Gael to slip seriously in the ranking, dropping to 77th position.
2016 is one of the most successful years of Monfils’ career. Thanks to a series of successful performances (Australian Open quarterfinals, Monte Carlo final, victory in Washington, US Open semifinal), he ranks a record 6th place in the world singles ranking.
In the next two years, Monfils won two trophies. One at Doha, where he defeated Andrei Rublev in the final match. The second trophy Monfils won in Rotterdam, beating Stan Wawrinka in the final.

In 2020, despite the pandemic and the cancellation of most tournaments, Monfils managed to win two ATP competitions in Montpellier and Rotterdam.
