Roberto Bautista-Agut Career
Roberto Bautista-Agut was born on April 14, 1988 in the Spanish province of Valencia (Castellón de la Plana). He got into tennis by indirect ways: the fact is that his father instilled in the boy a love for soccer and for some time he even played for the youth team of Villarreal. But the influence of his mother, a big tennis fan, was stronger, and eventually, Roberto preferred a racket to a soccer ball.
Bautista Agut took to the court for the first time in 2002 (Challenger in Valencia), but neither his debut season nor the three that followed brought him much success. Only after turning pro did things gradually improve, and in 2007 he won his first Futures trophy and then made it to the main draw on the ATP doubles tour.
Continuing to gradually collect junior series trophies, Roberto is progressing up the rankings and in 2009 he received the right to play in an ATP singles tournament for the first time. Despite not having a very successful start, a few months later the tennis player made his debut at the Australian Open and then the Miami Masters. He won his first Challenger title in 2012 and then repeated his breakthrough by reaching the 100th singles ranking twice more.
In early 2013, Bautista Agut made his first ATP Tour final in Chennai, beating, among others, world number six Tomas Berdych. Then came his first win in the majors and, although he failed to reach the second round at any Grand Slam tournament this season, he climbed to the top 60 at the end of the year.
Two important career milestones came in 2014: the Spaniard’s first ATP title on grass courts and an invitation to the Spanish national team, where he soon found his footing. In July, he won a second ATP trophy, this time on clay, breaking into the world’s top 20 tennis players. His strong performance allowed him to finish the year at No. 15, earning him the “Tennis Player of Most Progress” award.
A season later, Roberto wins his first major hardcourt trophy. Despite failing to go past the fourth round in the majors, in late fall he unexpectedly made it to the Masters final in Shanghai, beating, among others, world number one Novak Djokovic. Although he did not manage to win the trophy, the Spaniard finished the year ranked 14th in the singles rankings.
Despite the fact that 2017 was rather unimpressive for the tennis player, he started the next year with a trophy, and soon reminded himself once again by winning the first ATP 500 title in Dubai.

The real breakthrough for the Spaniard was 2019. Winning his fifth ATP trophy, the player reached the quarterfinal stage of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time. In the summer, he improved that figure by reaching the semifinals of Wimbledon, where, however, he lost to Novak Djokovic, who subsequently became champion of the competition. Later the tennis player won the Davis Cup as a member of the national team. Excellent results and steady play allow Roberto to debut in the top 10.
At the end of 2019, Bautista-Agut’s father dies, which for some time forces him to leave active performances, focusing on the family. Nevertheless, the start of the next season was successful for him: the tennis player made it to the final of the ATP Team Cup with the Spanish team, and then showed himself well at Grand Slam tournaments, not once dropping out before the third round.
