David Goffin Career
David Goffin is one of the most famous representatives of Belgian tennis in history. He was born on December 7, 1990 in the Walloon region of Liège. He got on the court at the age of six with the light hand of his father, who worked as a coach.
The Belgian revealed himself quite early. Even at the junior level it was clear he could achieve a lot: despite the lack of serious trophies, he not only reached the semifinals of tournaments such as the indoor European Championships and Wimbledon for Juniors but was also listed in the top 10 best players in the world under 18.
Goffin made his professional debut on the adult circuit in September 2006 at the Challenger in Mons, but did not make it to the main draw. He attracted the attention of experts and fans only two seasons later, reaching the doubles Futures final and soon winning his first career Junior Series trophy (singles). The Belgian finished the season at No. 324, an undoubted success for the young talent.
It took several more years of gradual ranking growth. Goffin won five titles before qualifying for ATP tournaments. He made his debut in Chennai, India, where the Belgian made it to the second round, where he lost to the more experienced Stan Wawrinka. By the end of the year, David was able to secure a place in the second hundredth world ranking.
The next season Goffen started again at a tournament in India, where he reached the quarterfinals. Having made it to the second round of the competition in Marseille, he once again switched to the Challengers, steadily improving his ranking. Soon David was invited to the national team and scored his first victory against the representative of Great Britain.
The clay series was particularly successful for him: having got into the main draw at Roland Garros as a lacquer drawer, David got to the fourth round, in which he lost to Roger Federer. A new ranking jump enabled the Belgian to qualify for the American majors, as well as go to the first Olympics of his career, where, however, he was unable to make any serious progress. Nevertheless, his strong play on tour helped Goffen finish in the top 50.
The tennis player could not consolidate his success. This was partly due to unstable play, and partly due to a serious injury (he broke his wrist during one of his workouts). Recuperation took several months and David returned hungry for victories: after a winning streak of over 20 matches, he won his debut trophy in Kitzbühel by beating the local favorite, Dominik Thiem. A little later, the tennis player repeated the achievement in the French Metz, rising to No. 22 in the singles ranking.
The next season was steadily successful. Perhaps the most striking event was Goffen’s participation in the Davis Cup, where the Belgian team managed to make it to the final for the first time. Having risen to the top 20, David continues to steadily improve his game, achieving good results at the Masters and the majors. In the summer of 2016, he takes part in the Olympics for the second time in his career, where he reaches the third round.
David meets 2017 as a representative of the elite pool of players. Despite the injury that forced him to miss Wimbledon, the player again shows quite confident results in the majors and for the second time helps the national team to break through to the Davis Cup final. Two ATP trophies become a pass to the London Open, where David not only qualifies from the group but also reaches the final, losing to Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria.
Despite generally very successful performances, Goffin did not manage to repeat his maximum (seventh place in the world ranking). In 2018, he temporarily left the top-20, but made up for it in the following season, winning the first doubles title of his career (Doha), and then, unexpectedly for many, giving out a brilliant grass segment. In particular, only Roger Federer could stop him in Halle, and at Wimbledon, where Goffen reached the quarterfinals for the first time in his career, Novak Djokovic.
At the start of the challenging 2020 season, David is proving again that he is a great team player, helping the national team make it to the quarterfinals of the ATP Cup. Despite a truncated schedule, the tennis player manages to maintain his position in the top 20 at the end of the year.
