Career
Daniil Medvedev was born in Moscow on February 11, 1996. He represents his native country on the international scene but has been living in Monaco for a long time. He started his sports career in France, where his family moved in order to give Daniil an opportunity to train and improve his playing style. For some time he studied at MGIMO, Department of Applied Economics and Commerce.
First tried his hand at the Futures level in 2011. He spent some time in juniors, shining at the European doubles championship together with future Russian national team colleague Karen Khachanov (final). However, he did not stay at that level for long, finishing in 13th place in the junior rankings.
In 2014 Daniil won his first ITF trophy. The young tennis player’s progress was quite obvious: a year later he made his debut in the main draw of the ATP tournament (doubles), and in the 2016 season he scored his first victory on the tour. Despite the fact that his attempt to break into the main draw of Wimbledon ended unsuccessfully for him, the Russian finished the year already in the top 100.
At the start of 2017, Daniil made his first breakthrough to the finals of the ATP Championships in Chennai. A little later he receives an invitation to the Russian national team and, although his debut in the national team was not particularly successful for him, continues to storm the world courts. In the summer he became one of the Wimbledon sensations, beating the Swiss champion Stan Wawrinka in the first round.
The real breakthrough for the Russian is 2018. He is having a season at a consistently high level (the only exception was the Grand Slam Series, in which he could win only one match) and wins three ATP trophies, which naturally leads to an improvement in his ranking position. The Russian finished the year ranked 16th in the singles rankings.
Despite the fact that few people expected Medvedev to repeat last year’s feats, he raised the bar again, starting 2019 by reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open. Shortly before the U.S. Open, he won the first Masters title of his career (Cincinnati) and then produced a series of brilliant bouts in the majors, reaching the final. And although against Rafael Nadal he was the obvious underdog, this match was one of the most difficult of his career. The rivals spent nearly five hours on the court, but in the end, the King of the Clay was able to snatch victory – 7-5, 6-3, 5-7, 4-6, 6-4.
Medvedev won his second Masters trophy (Shanghai) in the fall. He finished the year looking pale due to fatigue but finished the season ranked fourth in singles.
The year 2020 was uneven for the Russian, as well as for many other tennis players. After starting in the semi-finals of the ATP Cup he crashed out of several tournaments, leading experts to talk about his psychological burnout. Nevertheless, the enforced pause connected with the pandemic coronavirus has benefited Daniil: returning to the court, he reached the semifinals of the US Open, losing only to eventual champion Dominic Thiem, and then confidently went through the fall tournament series, winning his third career Masters (Paris) and lifting the trophy of the London Open. Medvedev finished the season again at No. 4 in the singles rankings.
The start of the 2021 season was very successful for Daniil Medvedev. He helped his national team win the ATP Tour and once again reached the final of a Grand Slam tournament at the Australian Open. However, this time without a chance he lost to Novak Djokovic of Serbia. The Russian recovered from a coronavirus in the course of the season and only returned to his best form during the American series. He added another Masters victory to his collection, and at the US Open he took revenge on Djokovic for his defeat in Melbourne. The tennis players met in a title match. Three sets were enough for our player to win.
Daniil Medvedev confidently held the end of the season-2021 and finished this segment on the second position in the rankings. He was also happy about the victory of the Russian national team in the Davis Cup. Daniil trained in a good mood during the off-season and reached the decisive stage again at the Australian Open. It seemed that he could win his second major in a row, but in the end the Russian did not beat Rafael Nadal. After two lost sets, the legendary Spaniard came together and won three games, beating his uncomfortable opponent.
Despite the loss in the Australian Open final, Daniil Medvedev climbed to the top of the world rankings in February. Previously, only two Russian players, Evgeny Kafelnikov and Marat Safin had matched his first place in ranking. Without any major victories, Medvedev soon lost this honorary achievement, but in the summer he took advantage of his weakness on the tour again and returned to the top of the world rankings. After failing to defend his title at the US Open 2022 ,he lost in the fourth round, Medvedev left the top-ranking position.
At the end of the 2022 season, Daniil Medvedev delighted his fans with a victory at the ATP 500 in Vienna, which was the biggest of the year and allowed him to establish himself as a participant in the Final Championship. The tennis player looked ambivalent in the company of the strongest players, losing three upset matches in a row in the group. All the matches ended in tie-breaks in the deciding game.

Current Season
The Russian had not beaten top-10 players for over a year, from January 2022 to February 2023, and even fell out of the top-ten rankings for a short period of time. However, it was in February that he began his winning streak of three tournaments in a row. Daniil Medvedev won in Rotterdam (Netherlands), Doha and Dubai (UAE). The title in the UAE was the 18th in his career, by this indicator he is now confidently ahead of Marat Safin (15). Only Nikolay Davydenko (21) and Evgeny Kafelnikov (26) have more high-level titles among Russians.
