Roger Federer is preparing to return to the ATP circuit after the long stop due to the covid-19 pandemic and the double knee surgery. To do so, however, he chose Doha and a tournament less demanding than a Slam. The Swiss player himself confessed this in an interview with SRF.

“I want to be able to concentrate only on my tennis without feeling the weight of such an important tournament like the Australian Open,” said the number 5 ranking player. Precisely because of the frozen ranking, the Swiss was able to focus solely and exclusively on his recovery without having to worry too much about points.
Roger Federer’s big goals for 2021 – never hidden – are Wimbledon and the Tokyo Olympics 2021. The uncertainty of the world health situation still does not allow to have any certainty about the competitions, even if some rumors, later denied, already referred to the possible forfeit of the 5 circles competition.
For the Swiss, who will be 40 years old next August, there are other dreams in the drawer and not all of them concern tennis. The most important thing for the player from Basel, born in 1981, is to have positive answers from his body: “I don’t want to jeopardize my future in any way to continue to play at a high level. I want to be able to go skiing with my family, try new sports. I would like to learn how to play ice hockey, go hiking and play basketball.”
Meanwhile, for the first time in the last 23 editions, the Australian Open will be held without Roger Federer’s name being included in the main draw. And, this alone, can already be considered a special event.
