Swiss tennis player Belinda Bencic has not participated in tournaments since September 2020 and has dropped to the 12th ranking. Last year at the Australian Open, Bencic lost in the third round to Aneta Kontaveit, so this year the Swiss has a good chance to move up in the rankings after the Australian Open.
The Swiss player shared her impressions of the previous season and her expectations for the new one with former tennis player Daniela Hantuchova during a program on Roland Garros Youtube Channel.
We got into a new environment that we haven’t dealt with before. Travelling has become a lot more difficult. We take a lot of tests, we can’t leave the tournament area. You have to be only in your room or on the courts. It’s not easy to get used to that kind of regime.
Now we are more focused on tennis, now you can’t go out for dinner or just a snack. But that’s our job and if it’s like that now, we have to accept it and do our best to play. It’s still fun at tournaments, but it used to be better.
My goals for this year are to stay healthy and be able to play tennis. That’s very important. It’s very challenging when you practice and prepare for tournaments, then play one, the other five get canceled, and then play one again. Hopefully, this year will be different and we’ll have a clear schedule. We’ll know what to prepare for.
I want to take advantage of that to get back in the top 10. I’m down to 12th place, so hopefully, I can get up in the rankings. I want to be as high as possible. And, of course, I need to concentrate on the crucible tournaments. I want to do well in them this year.”
