Elise Mertens was born on November 17, 1995 in Leuven, Belgium. Her father Guido Mertens was a furniture seller and her mother Liliane Barbe worked as a schoolteacher. Elise has a sister, Lauren.
The Belgian first picked up a racket at the age of four and began her professional career in 2013. Two years later she played for the first time in the main draw of the WTA doubles tournament, and another year later she made her way into the main and singles. In 2017, Elise won her first WTA title in Hobart, placing her in the top 100 in the world rankings.
Her favorite surface is grass. Her first tennis memory is watching Kim Clijsters’s match live. Mertens speaks English, Danish and French and loves animals. She has four dogs and many birds at home.
