Carla Suarez Navarro was born on September 3, 1988 in the Spanish city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Her father, Jose Luis, used to be a professional handball player, and her mother Lali was a gymnast. The athlete also has a brother Jose.

Cara first picked up a racket at the age of nine with the help of her mother. She began her professional career in 2003. In 2008, she debuted in the main draw of the Grand Slam tournament at Roland Garros, making it through the qualifiers and making it straight to the quarterfinals. This success allowed her to enter the Top 50 right away.

Her favorite surface is the clay. Her tennis idols are Steffi Graf, Justine Henin and Lleyton Hewitt.
