That there is little order at the moment in the WTA tour is no mystery. In recent years the Slams, especially those played on clay and grass, have reserved a large number of surprises and this Wimbledon is unlikely to follow a different plot. Even before the tournament begins, in fact, two of the biggest players on the tour have announced their retirement.
First Naomi Osaka, whose continuation of the season is really unpredictable at the moment and will depend totally on her serenity. In the last few hours has also been added that of the defending champion, Simona Halep, who has already skipped Roland Garros because of a calf strain suffered in Rome. The Romanian expressed all her understandable disappointment for this forfeit, but the recovery time was too short to be competitive on the London grass.
Simona Halep Message
It is with great sadness that I announce that I will not play in London, because my shin never recovered. I did everything to get ready for Wimbledon – after all, I have such fond memories of the last tournament.
I was proud and looking forward to playing on the local courts as the reigning champion.
Unfortunately, my body didn’t want to cooperate. I would have to save those emotions for next year.
I can honestly say that I am crushed and disappointed. It’s a tough decision and a challenging period. I’ve missed two Slams in a row and it’s a serious blow to my emotions and my mood.
We’ll see what the future holds for me. I hope I can be stronger and handle everything. Thank you to everyone at Wimbledon for your understanding and support.
We will miss you this year, @Simona_Halep – come back stronger in 2022 💪#Wimbledon

Due to Halep’s refusal, Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova was seeded for the tournament.
