Reigning US Open champion Rafael Nadal commented on his decision to give up defending the title this season.
“After much thought, I decided not to play this year at the US Open. The situation around the world is very difficult, the number of coronavirus cases is increasing day by day and the spread of the disease still seems uncontrollable.
We understand that the updated tennis calendar, four months after the pause, turns out to be very tough. I am sympathetic and thank the organizers for their efforts in preparing and holding the tournament.
I have great respect for the USTA, the organizers of the US Open and ATP for their efforts to hold competitions for players and fans around the world. It was really hard for me to do this, but I decided to follow my heart,” Nadal wrote on Twitter.
